Beware the bleeder!

I made a sweet little log cabin (not paper pieced) for donation to Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative/AAQI . When I finished the piecing it was not square so I decided to block it. Well, it blocked beautifully, square as can be and then I realized I was leaving a trail of RED! The tiny hearths were bleeding. I have no idea where I purchased, ages ago, the hand dyed fabric that I used for the center but it turns out it was not stable…no matter what I tried the bleeding would not be stopped. Sad day, I was so concerned that it would bleed on something else (I have a stain on my ironing board as a reminder of this little tragedy), I actually threw the piece away and made another one – this time paper pieced.

The finished “Little Log Cabin” is Awaiting Assignment on the AAQI site and it has navy blue hearths! Here are photos of the two quilts…

I started sewing and designing using fabric, thread, and paper when I was a child. I taught myself to make quilts, at first not following the "rules," then watched some experts, learned the rules, and made many hand quilted and appliqued quilts. I spent years focusing on miniature landscape quilts. Now I am a fiber and mixed media artist and that encompasses everything I have a passion for. I have taught, lectured, and my work have show nationally and internationally, some pieces have been published.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing information about the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative! I lost my Dad to Alzheimer’s in December of 2010 and have been committed to raising money for research through AAQI since he was diagnosed in 2006. I am a quilter and I love that the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative is a grass roots organization that is totally staffed by volunteers so that every available dollar can be used to fund research. I love your little quilt and am thrilled that you are supporting our cause!

  2. Beth,
Thank you so much for your comments. As you may already know, my dad, his sister, and my father-in-law succumbed to Alzheimer’s. I thank you so much for all you do for AAQI and the quilt and fiber art world as a whole.
    Quilt Away,
    A
