Stitching the Year Out

Fiber art, sewing, quilting, stitching, mark-making, what have you especially enjoyed working on this year?

Hand stitching has been something that has brought me great comfort during 2020. Here are a few of the pieces I’ve finished… Well, the thread work is finished, most have yet to be mounted or framed.

I used solid white, painted, stenciled, and gel plate printed, some commercial fabric for the backgrounds, one even has fused petals. I also discovered that the fabric I love to paint and use for applique, which in the fabric used for most often for batiks, is not as easy to embroider through as a nice regular quilter’s cotton because of the fine thread and tight weave. I started sewing and designing using fabric, thread, and paper when I was a child. I taught myself to make quilts, at first not following the "rules," then watched some experts, learned the rules, and made many hand quilted and appliqued quilts. I spent years focusing on miniature landscape quilts. Now I am a fiber and mixed media artist and that encompasses everything I have a passion for. I have taught, lectured, and my work have show nationally and internationally, some pieces have been published.

  3. Some lovely work, and the hand stitching really enhanced the pieces. I especially loved the mushroom, the green batik with the embroidered flowers, and the beauty and added meaning of the hourglass.
