Not So Close to the Vest

I found some old photos of a few vests I made, taken before I owned a digital camera; the photos aren’t the best but I thought I would share them anyway. It was when I was going through my Seminole period! One was just an experiment in curvy piecing, though I’m pretty sure I hand appliqued it together!

All of the vests are made from a basic commercial pattern (sorry can’t remember which company; it is was ages ago) but the front and backs designs are my originals. They included lots of tiny Seminole work, a pieced cockatoo (sort of), some raised and folded pleats held down by a few hand embroidery stitches. Some were included in the fashion exhibit at a local quilt show, some were gifted, I sold and even wore a couple. They were a learning experience…I learned I may never want to make another vest!

Watercolor and Flowers

I was looking through my art supplies and discovered an old box of watercolor tube paints that may have been my dad’s or maybe mine from high school!

old watercolours

They were pretty far gone, seeing as they were made sometime between the 1960s to 70s, but I managed to get some out of the tubes and decided to paint a little painting. It has been a really long time since I painted watercolor on paper and I’m rusty to say the least. It is very different from painting on fabric, which is more my thing but I’m happy with the painting. I think I may try to work it into a printed fabric design.

Now my creative juices are flowing and I’m ready to water down my textile paints and paint a watercolor on fabric… Looking at that painting makes me want to layer it and add detail using thread play and quilting. Would you rather paint on paper or fabric?

Seeing Red!

No art work today…it was a beautiful sunny day, in the eighties! I spent part of the day walking in the local Parkinson’s Association 5K Run with a couple loved ones and a cast of thousands (lots of dogs!). This year the t-shirts were red, if you know me well, you know red is not my color but I was invited to wear this and I think it fit pretty well. What do you think?

Also, I’m looking forward to publishing more hand painted fabric videos.

Thanks for stopping by!

Designing Fabric

Here is a sneak peek of a couple of our prototype fabrics. I will write more about who the “our” of this collaboration is in a future post.

We have been working on many designs for a while now but this is the first time we have had them printed to fabric, it is very exciting!

More to come…

Still Here and Kicking!

There has been much going on and I have been bad about focusing posting.

I was happy to learn that the Water is Life quilt exhibit at the United Nations Geneva has been extended for the second time and will be up until April 11, 2016. I’m really looking forward to seeing the quilts when they come to the States in 2017. I’m very proud to have a quilt in that exhibit. From what I have seen it looks like my quilt may be one of the simplest in design, other than it being a triptych, but that’s OK… sometimes simplistic says a lot.

In other news Terial Arts shared my Leaf Napkin Ring design on their blog recently and using my pattern, the owner Terry McFeely,  made a pretty blue fabric napkin ring with a sequin detail.

It’s fun to see what others do with a design to make it their own. I’ll be posting a How-to instructional video for making the Leaf Napkin Ring on my YouTube channel soon.

More news coming soon.
